Backup Software – is the best thing since… (Insert generic topic other than sliced bread here)

I’m a typical messy person, perhaps extreme in some cases. But when it comes to my computers, I’m organized like… (Insert another generic topic about being well-organized). Eesh I can’t right a simily today. I used to reformat my computers often, depending on how slow they got or how quickly I destroyed them. On that note, get some data recovery software too. I got a pretty good system for moving and saving my data now. I would always forget something when I would format a computer. At first it was always my favorites folder and some other things I assumed I saved. Then I would format programs that I lost the cd too.

So everything goes on the computer now into it’s own, nicely labeled folder, in a drive made for that type of application. I back up my favorites about once a week. I have iso copies of all my cds/dvds. And before I do any major install or changes I always do a backup of the operating system just as it is, in case something goes wrong.

THEN! (I know I’m going overboard) but because I live in a “not so nice neighborhood”, I backup everything I have onto two 500gig hard drives. My data barely fits but the backup software has a compression feature that definitely helps.Plus I always take my laptop with me.

I learned my lesson after my roommate caused my last “accident”. He asks if he can use my computer and I say go ahead. When I walk in he’s underneath my desk fiddling with stuff and my computer is frozen! What are you doing!? “I couldn’t get your mouse to work”, he says. Of course, he doesn’t know anything about computers, what made him think he could fix it, I have no idea. I had to do a hard reset, and poof, a terabyte of data gone. I ran four different data recovery softwares, only one was able to get a few programs out.

The way I like to run my computers is without anti-virus software. I use the Backup software as my anti-virus protection. Keeps everything running smoother and faster.
